Storytime - Winter Wear

I was a little worried that our current Texas temperatures wouldn't cooperate with this week's theme, but I had no need to fret. That day was our coldest yet, at 35F in the morning, meaning mittens and scarves were not far from the children's minds.

Books
Under My Hood I Have a Hat by Karla Kuskin

Snowy, Blowy Winter by Bob Raczka

Froggy Gets Dressed by Jonathan London*

*Underwear stories will get them laughing, guaranteed!

One Mitten by Kristine O'Connell George*

*This book didn't go over so well with the preschoolers. It may be more appropriate for a toddler group.

Songs/Rhymes
The Winter Pokey
Sung to: "The Hokey Pokey"
You put your right mitten in,
you take your right mitten out,
you put your right mitten in
and you shake it all about.
You do the winter pokey
and you turn yourself around.
That's what it's all about.
Additional verses:
You put your left mitten in . . .
You put your right boot in . . .
You put your left boot in . . .
You put your hat in . . .
You put your snowsuit in . . .

Felt Board
Four Little Snowmen
Four little snowmen riding on a sled
One fell off and bumped his head
Frosty called the doctor and the doctor said,
“No more snowmen riding on that sled!”
(Continue in this fashion until you get to zero)

Snowball, Snowball
Snowball, snowball
Cold and round!
Behind which mitten
Can you be found?

Hide the snowball behind one of the mittens and have the children guess a color.

Craft
Toddler
Snowy Mittens. Materials: Snowy paint (equal parts Elmer's glue and shaving cream), black construction paper, paper mittens, paintbrushes, glue sticks. Glue the mittens to the black construction paper, then paint using the the snowy paint. The paint will dry puffy, making your mittens look like they've been out building snowmen!

Preschool
Winter Paper Dolls. This is a free printable from DLTK. I let the preschoolers cut out the shapes themselves. It's always a daring venture when I give such a large group scissors, but they're getting better at using them.

  1. I loved all your ideas for this winter story time and especially the hint about making "puffy paint". Miss Leah

    1. Pokey is just a nonsense word in this case. The original song, "The Hokey Pokey", is a popular dance. The lyrics are:

You put your right hand in
you take your right hand out
you put your right hand in and you shake it all about (shake hand)
You do the Hokey Pokey and you turn yourself around (spin around)
That's what it's all about! (clap hands)
*repeat with different body parts (feet, elbows, head, etc)

You can make up a lot of new songs based on it, just like "The Winter Pokey" (I've done "The Monster Pokey", "The Reindeer Pokey", etc).
