Friday, Friday, gotta be Flannel Friday!

This week's flannel board was inspired by Tracey from 1234 More Storytimes. I used clip art, just like Tracey, for the hot dogs. You can find the clip art here.

Five fat hot dogs frying in the pan,

All of a sudden, one went

Storytime - Peas, Please!

Toddler

Books: Where is the Green Sheep? by Mem Fox and Green by Laura Vaccaro Seeger

Songs / Rhymes: “Good Morning”, “Hello, How Are You?”, “Open, Shut Them”, “Pea Soup” on the felt board, “If You’re Happy and You Know It”, “I Wiggle My Fingers”, and “The More We Get Together”. 

Craft: Peas on a Spoon. Materials: spoon printout, green foam circles, crayons, glue, and tape. The toddlers glued the circles to the spoons and colored the paper. The spoon picture came from SuperColoring.com.

Preschool

Books: Mabel O’Leary Put Peas in Her Ear-y by Mary Delaney and LittlePea by Amy Krouse Rosenthal

Songs / Rhymes: “Welcome to the Library”, “Hello, How Are You?”, “Open, Shut Them”, “Pea Soup”, “The Hokey Pokey”, and “The More We Get Together”. 

Craft: Peas on Ps. Materials: letter P printout, green construction paper circles, crayons, glue, tape, and scissors. The preschoolers glued their circles to their Ps and colored in their projects.

Flannel Friday - Pea Soup

Hello, Flannel Friday! I'm back!

I found this rhyme on Katie's (Sharing Soda's) wiki page. The pot template is from a Crayola coloring sheet. The logs and fire are from an earlier flannel I did called Campfire Pokey.

Pea Soup

One little pea,

Jumped into the pot,

And waited for the soup to get hot.

POP 

You put the oil in the pot and you let it get hot
You put the popcorn in and you start to grin.

POP!
Start the poem in a crouched position, knees bent, hands on the floor. At "sizzle", s-l-o-w-l-y rise until the final POP!, then jump up in the air.

Five Little Kernels
Five little kernels sizzling in the pot
All of a sudden, one went POP!

Four little kernels… etc.

Put up the five kernel shapes on the board, as spread out as you can. When you say POP! slap a white popcorn shape right on top of one of the kernels.

P-O-P
I used my magnetic letters to spell out the word pop. The preschoolers identified each letter as I held it up. We then came up with words that rhyme with pop, and substituted the first P with other letters.

Crafts

Cornstalk Pictures. Materials: Popcorn kernels, outline of a cornstalk on cardstock, crayons, glue, and tape. The toddlers glued and taped their kernels to the paper. I reminded the caregivers that the children were working on developing their fine motor skills, the same skills that will help them write in the future.

Preschool
Popcorn Kernel Pictures. Materials: popcorn kernels, white cardstock, glue, tape, crayons, and scissors. The preschoolers colored their paper and then glued their kernels on. They made very imaginative pictures!

Flannel Friday - Ice Cream

Happy Summer to you, Flannel Friday goers! In celebration of the upcoming season, I offer you this delightful treat: "Down Around the Corner at the Ice Cream Shop". 

I came up with this song after I was trying to find some short ice cream rhymes to use. The ice cream cones were made using clip art as a template. The sprinkles are made out of puffy paint.

Down Around the Corner at the Ice Cream Shop

Down around the corner at the ice cream shop

Were five ice cream cones with some sprinkles on top.

Along came a child with a dollar to pay.

He bought one and took it away.

It's my goal to make a set of my own, too. Instead of using paint to make the sprinkles, though, I'll most likely sew them on instead.

Change cheese to another pizza topping. I printed out pictures of the toppings, laminated them, and glued Velcro strips to their backs. The children were invited to shout out the name of the topping when I showed them the pictures.

Craft

I cut out pizza slices and toppings using a pizza-shaped Accucut die. The children glued their toppings onto their pizza. Yummy!
