Flannel Friday: Five Superheroes Ready to Fly

Though we're not doing the CSLP theme for SRP this summer, we ARE doing a fantasy theme. So of course I wanted to do a storytime on superheroes. Thank goodness for our very own library superheroes, Jbrary, and their plethora of songs about the topic.

The clipart came from cloudstreetlab's Etsy store (male set; female set). The sets are build-your-own, so you can play with the costumes, hair, and accessories to make your superheroes unique. I also got their monster pack for free and I can't wait to play with that! The heroes were printed out and laminated, and I intend to cut them out and add a magnet on the back.

Here are a few of the creations I made (the girl in all black is my villain!):

Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons by Eric Litwin and One Gorilla: A Counting Book by Anthony Browne

Songs / Rhymes: “Good Morning”, “Hello, How Are You?”, “Open, Shut Them”, “If You’re Happy and You Know It”, “One Elephant Went Out to Play” on the felt board, “I Wiggle My Fingers”, and “The More We Get Together”.

Craft: Sticky Shapes. Materials: construction paper, contact paper, and foam shapes. The caregivers peeled the covering off of the contact paper and the toddlers stuck their foam pieces to the sticky sheet. As they worked, they counted their shapes.

You Can’t Buy a Dinosaur with a Dime: Problem-Solving in Dollars and Cents by Harriet Ziefert and Max’s Bunny Business by Rosemary Wells.

Songs / Rhymes: “Welcome to the Library”, “Hello, How Are You?”, “Open, Shut Them”, “If You’re Happy and You Know It”, “Three Little Dollars” on the felt board, and “The More We Get Together”.

Special Activity: I placed pictures of money on the felt board and asked the preschoolers what the names were. I then asked the children how people get money and what they buy with it. I explained the difference between spending money and saving it in a piggy bank.

Craft: Piggy Banks. Materials: small paper bag, glue, tape, construction paper crayons, and scissors. The preschoolers thought about what they’d like to buy with the money they’ll save in their piggy banks (paper bags). They drew the item on the paper bag and told me about their plans.

Three Little Dollars

Flannel Friday - Money Money Money

The week before taxes were due, we had a preschool storytime about money. We talked about the different values of money, what we use money for (one preschooler suggested "stuff"), and how we can get money.

"Three Little Dollars" was originally "Three Little Nickels" from CanTeach. I changed the lyrics for my purposes, but you can find the original lyrics by visiting the link included after the song. The pictures of money came from Wikimedia Commons. The cookies, crayons, and piggy bank all came from morgueFile. The pictures were laminated and used on the magnetic board.

Happy Friday! The rest of the Flannel Friday gang is posting felt board ideas for "One World, One Story", the theme of their Summer Reading Program. But I'd like to give a little love to Texas where our theme is "Dig Up a Good Book". I'll be using this flannel board for our insect theme in July.
